Now we don’t have to believe that consciousness is non-physical or that human memory is encoded in subtle organic properties of brain cells in order to learn an important lesson from the hypothetical thoughts of the last paragraph. If a failure to preserve consciousness or a failure to preserve memory would mean the end of you, this is enough to be getting on with. What the concept of personal identity is keeping track of, it seems, is our continued conscious existence. (Perhaps continued conscious existence is necessary, but not sufficient for your persistence. We would need to run other thought experiments to check this.)
